ILLOCALITY: DEEP MAPPING THE (NORTH) AMERICAN LAND-MIND-SCAPE
This website is a digital archive of work by undergraduates at Loyola University Chicago. By mapping selected works of American literature to 1865, this is a text of maps relating to Henry David Thoreau, Emily Dickinson, Frederick Douglass, and Mary Rowlandson. Configuring a multiplicity of approaches to mapping, students of literature create renderings of literary criticism and close reading at the conjunction of creativity. This space is a reflection of individual contributions in a collaborative setting-- These maps are group texts, and they convey the dialogue and insights of the Spring 2021 class of ENGL 375. Intertwined with these maps are an array of papers written by students who have opted to have their work archived on this site. Special thanks to my peers, and special thanks to Dr. Marta Werner for opening a space for this critical work. Finally, you have my gratitude from your engagement.
MAPS
Mapping and archival work is at the intersection of memory. As a site of memory, this digital archive inscribes these maps in a particular historical moment. Spring 2021 was a strange time, so it is my hope that this archive maps the bizarre reality of Spring 2021 through our recollections of writers and their documents. Each mapping project maintains certain points of emphasis, and each of them are unfinished. The rough edges of frayed fragments bleeds into this space as an eclectic assortment of papers, visual media, and other approaches to mapping these figures. I appreciate your willingness to peruse/read these documents.
